McDaniel plans positive captaincy
Cam McDaniel has always understood that leadership can come in different forms. Words like “consistent” and “accountable” come to mind for the senior running back from Coppell, Texas, who earlier this week was selected as a captain for the Notre Dame football team.
McDaniel tries to embody those ideas and more on a daily basis. “I like to think of myself as all those things,” McDaniel said. “I want to portray that each and every day in the things I do on the field and off the field as well. I want my teammates to know that I’m the type of guy that’s gonna do it the right way. I think that was really what played a big role in my teammates and my coaches, allowing them to select me as captain.”
McDaniel will be adding those things more and more to his personal life in the coming months as well. Over the summer McDaniel married his longtime girlfriend. Earlier this week the pair found out they’re expecting their first child. Days later the team voted McDaniel captain, capping off what has been quite a few months by any measure. And the busiest part of the year starts Saturday when the Irish kick off against Rice.
“I think in 2014 I’ve grown up more than pretty much the rest of my life combined,” McDaniel joked.
“The season isn’t even here yet.” Growth on the field should let McDaniel guide a potentially potent Notre Dame rushing attack this season.
McDaniel is the eldest of a promising running back trio that includes sophomore Tarean Folston and redshirt freshman Greg Bryant, both highly regarded prospects coming out of high school. McDaniel rushed for 704 yards and four touchdowns on 152 carries last season.
